We live in an era of options. We can choose this, or choose that, and sometimes, we can have both, if we chose to. And the internet has made our range of options almost infinite. In the world of marketing, the internet has a plethora of choices and channels to choose from, especially with social media.

From Facebook to Twitter, Instagram to Pinterest; there are so many social media platforms to use when executing our marketing efforts, but which one(s) is(are) best for your company and brand? I will explain the most important uses and benefits of the top 5 social media platforms to help you determine which ones are the best for your company and brand.

Facebook

What is it: Facebook is a social networking site that allows you to connect with friends and family. You can create a profile, add photos and videos, leave comments, write on profile walls, and even “Like” photos and videos.

What it’s best for: Facebook is best for pretty much any business and brand. You will be allowed to post photos of your products and write about your services.

Benefits: For a business and brand, Facebook has created Facebook Business Pages. Facebook Business Pages allows you to create a page specifically for your business, separate from your personal profile. Instead of adding “friends”, you will be able to invite your friends, clients, and prospect clients over to “like” your page and be part of your business community. You will be set as an administrator and can add others on your team as administrators as well.

Having a Facebook Business Page will allow you to connect with your audience and fans, inform them of new products and services, give you the opportunity to get feedback, and give your brand significant exposure to the world. You can host virtual events, run Ads, book consultations, sell your products, and even create public and private groups through Facebook. As already stated, Facebook is great for, and is actually essential to, any business and brand.

Instagram

What is it: Owned by Facebook, Instagram is an online social networking and mobile photo-sharing app that allows you to take photos and videos and share them to a feed. You can also sync your Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts with your Instagram account to spread your media across the platforms at once.

What it’s best for: ]Instagram is great for any business to display visuals. That would apply to almost any business. Whether you share photos of your products, or post flyers about your services, Instagram can be great for brand exposure.

Benefits: Individuals will be allowed to see your products first hand when you post them. Instagram is used by millions of people all over the world and your brand can be placed right in front of those people. Placing hashtags on your posts can bring even more exposure. (More about the importance of hashtags will be discussed in a later blog). Followers can leave comments under your posts and you will be allowed to comment back to interact with your followers. Use Instagram if your brand has plenty of visuals to share to provide maximum brand exposure.

Twitter

What is it: Twitter is a social networking platform that allows you to read and post short messages of up to 140 characters. These messages are known as “tweets”.

What it’s best for: Twitter is best for those who engage in social media several times a day. Since tweets are short, constantly posting tweets are critical to stay relevant. In our current generation of short tension spans, tweets can grow old quickly. Twitter is great if you constantly have content to share, outside of Facebook, and don’t mind being on twitter more than a few minutes out of the day to promote your brand. You also have the ability to post photos and video clips.

Benefits: Twitter will allow you direct interaction with your audience just like Facebook. Twitter is awesome for minute by minute promotion, running fun contests, and finding out your audience’s needs and desires. Use Twitter for your business if you always have fresh content that can be spread into multiple attention-capturing tweets.

Pinterest

What is it: Pinterest is a web and mobile application company that offers a visual discovery, collection, sharing, and storage tool. Users create and share the collections of visual bookmarks (boards). Boards are created through a user selecting an item, page, website, etc. and pinning it to an existing or newly created board. Postings are known as “Pins”.

What it’s best for: Pinterest is for any business or brand that has visuals to share. A majority of Pinterest’s users are women, so it’s a great fit for women-owned businesses.

Benefits: Pinterest will help you gain tremendous exposure for your brand by posting “pins”, which will allow others to repost your pins on their boards. You can also share inspirations and other pins from other profiles to your own boards.

LinkedIn

What is it: LinkedIn s a social networking site designed specifically for the business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members to establish and document networks of people they know and trust professionally.

What it’s best for: LinkedIn is for everyone! That’s right, even if you haven’t started your business, you should have a LinkedIn account to display your professional endeavors and achievements.

Benefits: LinkedIn is a great way to network with professionals in your industry, and in other industries. You can also promote your brand and business by creating a business LinkedIn page. Individuals can follow your page, post comments, and ask you questions. This in turn will allow you to, like the other social media platforms, engage with your audience to find out what they need and desire. LinkedIn is also a great way to build your team. You can post job openings and look at potential candidates’ LinkedIn profiles as they serve as digital resumes. LinkedIn is a must-have for your business and brand!
